There are so many options available for you to start your video production journey. Here are a few options that I have used in the past, as well as some of their pros and cons.
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k
This camera was a fantastic first choice for me as I started my video production career. The accessibility of the camera's settings being available on the main screen allowed for easy operation. The video quality was absolutely incredible, especially for the price point that you pay for it. Unfortunately, it goes downhill from there. Battery life and storage management suffers, with each battery lasting about 20 minutes, and the camera regularly recording over 1TB per shoot. A lot of rigging needs to take place in order for the camera to be used fully. Additionally, the camera suffers a little bit in lowlight due to the sensor, which is a Micro 4/3 sensor. It also does not have continuous autofocusing, and it can be a challenge using it on a gimbal.
Panasonic Lumix GH5
This camera improved on the Pocket 4K’s shortcomings, especially in battery life and storage management. It does use the same MFT mount and sensor, and suffers from the same lowlight issues as a result. It does feature continuous autofocus, though it is not the best still. Still a great image, and it is much easier on a gimbal.
Sony A7IV
This camera was my next step up from the Lumix, and it was a definite change from the previous model, especially due to the change in lens ecosystem. The Image was a lot crisper than the other two cameras, largely due to the Full Frame Sensor it uses. Battery Life and Memory issues were nonexistent, and the small form factor was great. The autofocus worked wonders as well, especially for subjects that like to move around.
Sony A7Siii
This is the primary camera that I use nowadays, and it is a monster. All of the benefits from the A7IV, as well as fantastic lowlight capabilities. Not much more to say, this was a gamechanger for me.
