Case Study: Producing Podcast-Style Videos for a Web Series

There was a client that we had in the past that wanted to produce a series of videos evaluating different bartenders in Dallas in an effort to try to find the best bartender of them all! We shot a total of 4 long-form podcast style videos for his web series, called High 5 Cocktails.

For this particular video series, we interviewed 4 different bartenders in 3 different bars, prior to the bars’ hours of operation, so as not to interfere with their business. Coordinating with the bars’ owners was an easy affair, as many were very friendly with the host of our show, Jay. I understand this can be a challenging point for some. We shot this project with 3 cameras, with two tight shots and one wide shot, which is typical for a podcast style shot. During one of the video shoots, we had some difficulty with the lighting, as we did not expect the sun to shine as brightly in the background of our host. Originally, we had planned for this not to be an issue, but for the angle that the client requested, the decision was made to prioritize the angle that the client wanted. I’ll link to this particular video so that you may see how this looks visually.

Another situation that we ran into was in how the show was structured. The client wanted each of the prepared drinks to be as fresh as possible to be able to assess them fairly. In order to collect the appropriate B-roll, we needed to disconnect one of the cameras and mount it to a gimbal. For this particular project, the budget didn’t allow for a 4th camera, but I do feel that this would have made the ideal situation for this project.

All-in-all, the projects came together very nicely, and serves as a great example of a podcast style web series that we can produce.

Here are some links to the cameras that we used, as well as to the project and client’s webpage:
